Montreal: Part 1

Over Labor Day (and a few vacation days tacked on!) we took a fun vacation to Montreal.

The Pros of this destination:

  • Not too far from us
  • People speak French
  • You get to cross a border!
  • Lots of kosher food
  • People speak French!

Over our trip, we made quite a few visits to Second Cup, a Canadian chain. I was glad to see that the great bookstore/coffee shop combo, which seems to be disappearing near me, is alive and well up north.

And we also enjoyed a local delicacy, poutine--french fries slathered in cheese and gravy (in this case, vegetarian gravy, which is much tastier than it sounds!). I was super excited for this and it definitely met my expectations!

The little lady looked especially cute on our trip:

This was the day I had the great revelation of BABIES IN CARDIGANS. Where have I been?

E had a bit of an ear infection and fever for part of the trip, but she was chipper during the day. She also developed a new hobby, namely trying to steal our drinks and chomping on straws.  See Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

And Exhibit C:

I'm trying to tell her that she has to eat her baby food first, but she won't listen.

One of our favorite stops was a local farmer's market:

And you can't beat the Starbucks menu--in French!

Stay tuned for Part 2 of our trip!

What is YOUR favorite part about going on vacation?

  1. Looks like a fun trip. I would love the French...I can't speak it but it would make me feel like I had traveled so much farther than just across the border, lol

  2. I'd love to go to Montreal. I took French for years-it'd be great to see if I could pick it back up! :)
Looks like E had a blast-my boys loved stealing straws at that age too!
I just love the idea of getting a break from my routines, eating out, spending time with my family-vacations, even mini-ones, are the best!

  6. Ohhhh, we went to Montreal last summer. I have a friend who lives there and we stayed at a B&B right around the corner from her and the BEST BAGELS EVER. Tell me you had the bagels! We had them hot, every morning and we bought a bag for the 12 hour drive home and they didn't not make it to the US border. :)

I have made the poutine several time since then. The trick is to find cheese curds because you need that "squeak" when you bite.

  7. Yay for vegetarian gravy! You have revived my hopes of finding food if I go to Montreal ever. Sounds like a lovely trip.
